Ligue 1, Stade rennais 0 - 2 Marseille. The runs of invincibility are over for Stade Rennais FC and Nicolas Douchez, First defeat for Rennes against a team from the Top 5, Brandao’s situation dividing Marseille… All echoes after the game between Stade Rennais FC and Olympique de Marseille.
- End of the run (part 1) :
By losing to Olympique de Marseille, Stade Rennes brought a run of five consecutive victories to an end. Another run came to an end with this Marseille victory, Rennes’ attacking streak: Indeed, all competitions included, Rennes had scored at least a goal in all of their last ten games.
- End of the run (part 2) :
Before hosting OM, Stade Rennes had earned seven consecutive victories at home in Ligue 1. This run also came to an end yesterday. Last time Rennes had lost a home game, it was against Montpellier (0-1, Game Week 10), on October 23rd, 2010, through a goal by Joris Marveaux.
- Mémory:
Before the game, a minute of silence was respected in memory of recently deceased Jean-Claude Lavaud, a 1965 Coupe de France winner alongside Daniel Rodighiero and pals, as well as to show respect to the victims of the tsunami in Japan.
- Insufficient :
Slightly disappointed by the evening’s result, Frédéric Antonetti remained lucid when discussing his team’s performance: “We are in a learning curve, just as the supporters by the way, they could have given us more support. We are not use to playing that sort of games, and this is why we lost. We need to analyse this, as not everything should be thrown away”, he explained.
- End of the invincibility for Douchez :
By beating Nicolas Douchez in the first half, Loïc Rémy ended the Rennes goalkeeper’s run of invincibility in Rennes. Indeed, the former Toulouse keeper had not conceded a goal since 563 minutes. Since the home game against Brest in November (2-1, Game Week 14) and a penalty, Douchez hadn’t conceded a single goal at the Route de Lorient.
- Double trouble:
Stade Rennais FC hadn’t conceded two goals in a same home game since hosting OGC Nice (2-2, Game Week 37) at the end of last season. Only Reims, this year in the Coupe de France, had shown more prolific in attack by scoring four times (3-4, a.e.t).
- Premiere with the top 5...
Against the other four teams currently present at the top 5 positions in the league (Lille, Marseille, Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain), Stade Rennes had never lost this season. The defeat to Olympique Marseille was therefore a premiere. At the moment, Kader Mangane’s partners managed one success (against Paris), four draws (against Lille, in Paris, against Lyon, in Marseille) and one defeat (against Marseille).
- Brandao makes the headlines again...
Returned to Brazil after a difficult week on a juridic and personal level, Brandao has, against his will, stirred controversy after the game between Rennes and Marseille. The reason? Immediately after the first goal by Loïc Rémy, some Marseille players rushed towards the substitutes’ bench to brandish a shirt with the name of their team-mate, currently in turmoil amid suspicions of sexual assault. At the end of the game, Stéphane M’bia received a hostile reception from the Marseille fans when the former Rennais went to lay the Brazilian’s shirt in front of their stand.
- Dassier didn’t like it :
Questioned about his players’ initiative after the game, Marseille’s president didn’t hide his annoyance at the gesture made by Olympique de Marseille players to show their support for Brandao : «I haven’t been informed of the players’ intention and I regret it, I would have prevented it. I understand their need to send a comforting message to a team-mate, but a bit of reserve would have been welcome (…) It’s a shame, it tarnishes the victory. With an awkward decision, this affair has been brought to the same level of importance as our victory”.
- Montaño under the threat :
Booked by M.Turpin for elbowing, Victor Hugo Montaño is now under the threat of a suspension if he receives another yellow card. The Colombian striker will remain liable of a suspension for the next seven Stade Rennes games.
For the record, the first of these two yellow cards had been received against Nice (2-0). Montaño had then been booked… for removing his shirt while celebrating his goal.
Only one other player is currently under the threat of a ban for his next yellow card. Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik will have to remain cautious for the next two games.
- Centuries for Douchez :
Nicolas Douchez has honoured two « centuries » against Olympique de Marseille. The goalkeeper played his hundredth Ligue 1 game with Rennes. Before his arrival in 2008, he had « only » played 86 games in the top flight, all with Toulouse FC.
Beaten by Loïc Rémy after 23 minutes, the Stade Rennes keeper also conceded his hundredth goal, in all competitions, since he joined the club.
