Reserve: the situation is becoming critical

Bastien 17 January 2011 à 20h47

Beaten for the seventh time this season, the Stade Rennes reserve tasted defeat once again at la Piverdière against its Caen counterpart (0-1). Rapidly reduced to ten men, the young Rennais maybe deserved better. But losing has become a bad habit since the beginning of the season.

After this 17th match day, the Stade Rennes reserve is second from last in the CFA division, at a lacklustre sixteenth position. Worse, Laurent Huard’s players are virtually last, since Vendée Luçon, despite having a point less, also has a game in hand and a slightly better goal difference (-5 vs -6).

Sunday afternoon, Rennes was defeated on its pitch by Caen. Sure, it was on the narrowest of margins, but the Bretons seem unable to recover from their terrible beginning to the season. Even with eight professional helping out the team, including Johann Carrasso, Georges Mandjeck and Samuel Souprayen, the “Rouge et Noir” were soon close to breakdown point. Because of a “harsh sending-off”, for Laurent Huard, of John Boye, who abandoned his team-mates half an hour in the game, after he held Livio Nabab in the penalty area. French U21 international Damien Marcq took the spot-kick , but his shot bounced on Rennes goalkeeper’s post (30’)

Tactically, Laurent Huard was then forced to change his organisation after the dismissal of the Ghanaian international (his second this season), by replacing a forward (Jean-Bryan Boukaka, 1992 generation) with a full back (Benjamin Basse, 1991). Having started at left back, Samuel Souprayen was repositioned at centre-back, alongside Bira Dembélé.

A decisive dismissal

During the second half, Caen’s superiority was even more pronounced, thanks notably to Anthony Deroin’s input at midfield. On an acceleration by Georges Mandjeck, the Cameroonese delivered an ideal ball to Slimane Sissoko. The Rennes striker saw his shot hit Riffi Mandanda’s (brother of international goalkeeper Steve) post. A few minutes later, Caen was upping the tempo once more, and Anthony Deroin was even hitting Johann Carrasso’s cross bar. A good omen? Alas not, since Caen would finally score through Benjamin Morel in the game’s last fifteen minutes. On the left, the Normand midfielder eliminated Yassine Jebbout and went on to beat Johann Carrasso from close range (0-1, 77’). Frank Julienne’s team-mates were fighting back late in the game, but Bira Dembélé’s header was no worry to Riffi Mandanda. With this victory, Caen is crawling out of the relegation zone. This is far from being the case for Rennes.

After the game, Laurent Huard didn’t hide his disappointment in the wake of the match circumstances, and of John Boye’s dismissal after thirty minutes: “the game was even, and then it wasn’t anymore after Boye’s rather harsh dismissal. We lacked a bit of good fortune, but we should have believed in ourselves a bit more. We didn’t press our opponent enough. Generally, we rushed way too much with the ball. The content is interesting, but we lack confidence”. Regarding the difficult situation of Rennes’ reserve, the Rennes coach goes straight to the point: “to come out of the danger zone, we have to be a team. Everyone should give more for the other”. The point is made!
