Coupe de France, Stade Rennais 7 - 0 Cannes. At the end of a serious, perfectly controlled match, Rennes beat AS Cannes (National) easily. The “Rouge et Noir”, scoring 4 goals in fifteen minutes during the first half, kept going in the second half and qualified easily for the Coupe de France’s last 32.
Immediately, Rennes started camping in the Cannes half, rapidly testing Radic on crosses by Tettey and Danzé. The first real alert arrived at the fifth minute, when Brahimi forced the Cannes keeper to a good save. Cannes struggled to clear their area, but still managed in Rennes’ half when, on a delivery from Avinel, Masson controlled with his chest in the penalty area before turning for a shot (13’), well blocked by Carasso.
In a quarter of an hour, Rennes would take a decisive advantage. After a good work by Boukari on the right wing, Tettey, well positioned at the entrance of the penalty area, beat Radic with a crossed shot well place in the inside netting (14’). Rennes had not scored in the play since November 20th, and the home game against Brest!
A few minutes later, on a low cross by Boukari, Montaño popped at the first post to strike the ball home (19’). Then, on a free-kick badly cleared by the AS Cannes defence, Kana-Biyik recovered the ball and delivered a cross on Montaño’s head for his second (23’). At the 30th minute, another cross by Boukari, still on the right wing, was slotted home by Yann M’Vila, alone in front of the goal. The young midfielder scored his first ever professional goal, on the former Lens player’s second assist with his new club.
One bad news came to spoil the fine first half by Rennes however. After half an hour, Montaño, injured, was replaced by Camara, with Boukari taking the centre forward position.
In the second half, Rennes were first to show dangerous again, on a shot by Théophile-Catherine landing very close to Radic’ goal (50’). A minute later, Brahimi came agonisingly close to adding a fifth goal on a header. Stade Rennes had Boulevards opened in Cannes’ defence and at the 56th, it was Camara’s turn to take his chance at the end of a good combination with Brahimi and Tettey, resulting in a corner-kick.
The « Rouge et Noir » the released the pressure a bit, and Antonetti’s voice started resounding in a pretty empty Stade de la Route de Lorient. The players would soon react. On a good ball by Brahimi in the centre, Tettey beat Radic with a good chipped ball from the outside of his right foot, managing his brace (63’). Six minutes later, Camara eliminated the Cannes goalkeeper before pushing the ball in the empty net (69’). Rennes had not scored six goals in the same game since a victory in Guingamp in 2001 (1-6)!
But the Bretons would not stop there. At the 77th minute, Camara recovered a ball lost by Boukari in the penalty area, and launched Brahimi would beat Radic with a right footed shot. The Rennais had two more chances to make the win heavier at the end of the game and during injury time, but the score line would not change anymore. 7 to 0, Rennes had not won with such an advantage since a Coupe de France 8th round against Baud, on February 13th, 1988.
« Serious » and « diligent » according to Frédéric Antonetti’s words at the end of the game, the “Rouge et Noir” took a good start to the year 2011. They will have to confirm these good dispositions as soon as next week-end, for the next league game against Arles-Avignon.
