Is Stade Rennes unloved or an easy target? Facing criticism from specialised radio and televisions shows, Frédéric Antonetti decided to “attack” before the trip to Caen on Wednesday.
Frédéric Antonetti had decided to make a point during the press conference on Monday, before this year’s last game, on Wednesday, in Caen. He judges the analysis made by the national press “harsh” after the success against Valenciennes. “Some people dare, without having seen the game, to say it was the same as against Bordeaux. The one who saw both games and say it was the same against Valenciennes as it was against Bordeaux needs to find a new job, as he has got no idea.” Directly targeted, Pierre Ménès, a journalist at Canal Plus who made the remark during TV show Canal Football Club on Sunday.
According to Frédéric Antonetti, criticisms of Rennes performances have become a commonplace for specialised radio and television football shows. Especially after the game against the Northern team. “I’ve watched Jour de Foot (Ed.:a French football TV Show) and it looked like Valenciennes was giving us a thumping! Doing such a game summary is disinformation, I don’t agree.”
Despite Rennes’ current third place, the manager accepts that the « last games are not sufficient in terms of content », but he won’t give in. “I don’t like people who comment without watching, and I’m talking about the national media. It isn’t acceptable to make such a judgement on people without having the full knowledge.”
"Nobody says a word when we play without Apam, Marveaux, Kembo and Dalmat. This is really disturbing me. (…) Sylvain Marveaux is our most talented player, and we barely had him since the beginning of the season. If tomorrow Lille loses Hazard, Lyon Lisandro or Marseille Valbuena, they will make mountains of it! (…) If you don’t want to talk about Stade Rennes, then don’t, but if you do talk about us, do it objectively! And watch the game first.”
"If I’m still there, it is because I’ve attacked sometimes to defend my work. Unfortunately, I can’t rely on great player career”, the Corsican manager explains. But his declarations are also an occasion to unite his squad, and he regrets the fact that Yassine Jebbour’s first game in Ligue 1 wasn’t noted. “It’s a shame, for the youngsters who have to be give a lot of credit for putting up with things that weren’t expected, and do it very well.”
To receive criticism, "Isn’t it something positive?", asks Johann Carrasso, who is expected to replace Nicolas Douchez in the goals while he undergoes surgery. “When we scored at the last minute this week-end, everybody exploded, was it not linked to it too? I believe it brings strength to the squad, a will to prove we haven’t stolen our 31 points.”
