Interviewed on french radio RTL this Thursday, Pierre Dréossi discussed the club’s current search of a an attacking addition to the squad, the possibility to manage an “interesting” recruitment in January, during the winter transfer window, and last but not least, he shed a new light on Sylvain’s Marveaux situation, with a contract expiring in June.
A very ordinary interview was closing to its end, when Pierre Dréossi implicitly gave new information on a topic which had been buried over the last few months, the contract situation of Sylvain Marveaux. Indeed, unless a contract extension is signed before then, the midfielder will be free to leave his training club in June.
Questionned on this possible outcome, the general manager replied in a rather unexpected way. “There is no way we would change the payroll logic our success is based on, Dréossi stated, clearly implying that the negotiations have reached a stumbling block on the players’ salary demands. We will certainly not make an exception, as it would mean endangering the whole team’s balance”.
A situation reminiscent of Moussa Sow’s, last year, when the academy-grown striker failed to accept the terms of Rennes’ contract offer, ending up leaving for Lille on a free transfer in June this year. This possibility doesn’t seem to alarm Dréossi however, who prefers to consider the club’s interest. “If we can find a solution, we will find a solution. I think we can manage it but it will have to be a solution that satisfies all parties. If Marveaux was to leave for free, it would be a shame, but not a disaster. What matters most is that we maintain a real financial balance. We can’t mess up with the wages of twenty-three players for just one, whether it is Marveaux or another one. It is highly important, since it is part of the Stade Rennais’ “success story”. We can’t knock that balance, deep trouble could be expected if we did”.
Rennes’ general manager also gave a few hints regarding the club’s search of an attacking joker. Nothing new on this matter, with Pierre Dréossi reminding on and on that although Stade Rennes are « searching », they would avoid “any nonsense” in recruiting a player that doesn’t represent a real addition to the current squad.
He also admitted that the staff realised in August that “Montaño wasn’t exactly the player expected on the right flank, and much better as a centre forward”, opening up the possibility to finalise the “planned departure” of Ismaël Bangoura and accept an offer “which could not be refused” for Asamoah Gyan.
The possibility remains to hire a joker in the French leagues before January. “If there is a possibility, we will do it before the winter transfer market”, Dréossi promised. If we don’t manage it, it is sure that we will try and achieve something interesting in January”. Duly Noted.
