Stade Rennais - Toulouse : The History

Bastien 30 September 2010 à 10h05

The Stade Rennais will face Toulouse, this Sunday at 21:00 C.E.T at the Stade de la Route de Lorient, as part of the Ligue 1 8th game week. A history of encounters between the teams.

The Opposition

The Toulouse Football Club, in its current form, only appeared in 1970, with the creation of US Toulouse. The Occitan club initially entered the second division (South) during the 1970/1971 season, remaining at this level for several seasons. The club took its current name in 1977, and soon started to target promotion into the French top flight. It would happen during the 1981/1982 season, which Toulouse ended in first position of the Second division (Groupe B) before Thonon. The TFC had managed to leave the second level and offer itself a Division 1 future.

Soon, the Toulouse club strengthened their squad considerably but went on with irregular performances during their first few seasons. The efforts were eventually rewarded during the 1986/1987 season, Toulouse finished in the league’s top 3, only behind Bordeaux and Marseille. This remains the best season in the club’s history.

The early 90’s were a more delicate time for the TFC. Toulouse was relegated to second division in 1994 after finishing 19th in the Division 2. The club went on to live a time of ups and downs between the top two divisions. Eventually, Toulouse was sanctioned on financial grounds by the DNCG, and relegated to National (3rd level) in 2001. The TFC reacted well after this relegation, and led by Christophe Revault (the former Rennes goalkeeper), the “Pitchouns” were back in first division at the start of the 2003/2004 season. Three years later, the Toulouse FC ended the Ligue 1 in 3rd place, just in front of the Stade Rennais, and qualified for the Champions League qualification play-offs.

In Europe, Marcico’s TFC managed the incredible performance to knock-out Maradonna’s Napoli (0-1, 1-0, pen.) in 1986, with el Pibe de Oro missing the decisive penalty shootout. The TFC’s European campaign was to end at the next round however, against Spartak Moscow (3-1, 1-5). Toulouse qualified for the UEFA Cup again the next year, but they were knocked out in the Round of 32 by Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen, the eventual winner of the competition on that year.

Several big names in French and European football played their football in the Occitan club. Jean-Marc Ferratge, Christian Lopez, Dominique Rocheteau, Yannick Stopyra, Gérard Soler, Alberto Marcico, and more recently Fabien Barthez gave the Toulouse club its finest hours.

Previous Meetings

The general summary is clearly in favour of the Breton club, since the Stade Rennais FC won in 20 occasions at the Stade de la Route de Lorient, for only two victories by Toulouse.

With time, the Stade Rennais FC sort of became the Haute-Garonne club’s nemesis, as Toulouse failed to win in Brittany since the 1983/1984 season.

Even better, the SRFC won four of their last five home encounters against TFC. Last year, the “Rouge et Noir” had easily beaten the Occitan club, thumping Toulouse 4-1 with goals by Hansson, Kembo, and a brace by Asamoah Gyan.

Saison 2009/2010 : Douchez - Fanni, Mangane, Hansson, Bocanegra - Tettey, Leroy (Kembo Ekoko, 82’), M’Vila - Gyan (Doumbia, 73’), Briand, Bangoura (Danzé, 70’).

Summary of Stade Rennais - Toulouse en Ligue 1 : 30 games, 20 Rennes victories, 8 draws and 2 Toulouse victories, 57 goals to Rennes, 24 goals to Toulouse.
Last Rennes goal scorer: Jirès Kembo Ekoko (March 20th, 2010)
