A few weeks before the league restarts, Samuel Souprayen has extended his contract for Rennes by 3 more years, being now tied to the club until June 2014. A strong vote of confidence offered by Rennes’ staff towards his young defender from Reunion Island.
This is what you call brilliant news! One year before his contract expires, Souprayen and Rennes’ management agreed on a three year extension. The young defender is now tied to Rennes until June 2014.
Trained at Rennes, Souprayen has to be considered as one of the best defenders having visited the Academy over the last ten years. Clever in his moves, in his ability to read the game, the player has impressed by his serenity in the various youth teams of the club. His implication and his versatility convinced all of his coaches, as the player can be lined up as a centre back or a left back with no effect on his good performances.
In 2007, he wins the U18 French League title before the consecration. At the end of an ideal journey in the competition, the Young Rennais win the Gambardella Cup, beating Bordeaux in the final at the Stade de France (3-0). Captain of this young 1990 generation, a squad of young players as applied as serene, he proved himself as the boss in central defence - his best position – not conceding a single goal during the competition.
Two months after this success, the first trophy for Rennes since another Gambardella won by players such as Jimmy Briand, Jacques Faty or Yoann Gourcuff in 2003, “Soupape” signed his first three-year professional contract. The following season, the Reunion Island man was a regular starter in Laurent Huard’s Reserve team, playing 31 games during the 2008-2009 season.
Eager to play as much as possible, and possibly at a level matching his ambition, Souprayen was loaned to Dijon (Ligue 2) the following season. The right choice visibly, as his spell in the Côte d’Or was a real boost to his learning curve.
Under Patrice Carteron’s management, himself a former right back in Rennes, in the 90’s, he joined a team playing arguably the most exciting football in the French second league. Playing as a left back, Souprayen soon confirmed all the ability guessed during his Academy years in Rennes.
During this season, he was a starter in 31 occasions, and was noticed for his solidity as well as his high work rate on the left flank, often joining the attacking lines to make the difference. Informed of Souprayen’s good performances Erick Mombaerts picked him in several occasion in his France U21 Squad, for a first game in November against Tunisia (1-1)
Back from his loan, he comes back to Brittany with more guarantees in regards to his future with the “Rouge et Noirs”. Comforted by Frédéric Antonetti’s declaration, expressing his desire to make Souprayen his first-choice left back for the 2010-2011 season, Souprayen comes back in Rennes with the aim to take over the position. While a recruitment was considered at the club, Carlos Bocanegra was transferred to Saint Etienne, leaving the position to be taken by the young player.
Another mark of confidence towards Souprayen, who has started all pre-season games so far with the first team. At 21, Rampillon’s former pupil should gradually take his marks in the Stade Rennais defence, and soon become a key member of the team. Serenely, as always.
