Auxerre - Stade Rennais : The history
Publié le 11 November 2010 à 17h21 byStade Rennes will face AJ Auxerre, this Sunday 17:00 CET at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps, as part of Ligue 1’s Game Week 13. A history of encounters between the teams.
The opposition
The Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise (AJA : Auxerre Youth Association) was founded in 1905 by the Abbot Ernest Deschamps, the first major figure in the club’s history. The second main man is the legendary Guy Roux. He took the reins of the club in 1961, as a managing player. The Bourgogne team was then playing in the Division d’Honneur (highest regional level).
19 years later, they were promoted to Division 1, finishing runners-up in the Coupe de France in the process (defeated by FC Nantes in the final), a season before their promotion.
Since 1980, Auxerre has remained in the top-flight, climaxing with a League – Coupe de France double in 1996. In 27 years in Ligue 1, Auxerre finished only 3 times beyond the 10th position, and won four Coupe de France, mainly thanks to an Academy where a few of France’s best ever players learnt their football.
Previous Meetings
Travelling to Auxerre is never an easy affair. The first meeting at the Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps in Division 1 was played on October 8th, 1983. The Bourguignons won 1-0 at the time. In fact, it took 18 years before Rennes eventually managed to come back from the Yonne with all three points. The first victory was taken on May 12th, 2001, a 1-0 victory with a goal by Severino Lucas. On the following season, Stade Rennes won in Auxerre again in a slightly crazy game (3-2) with goals by Laurent Battles, Frédéric Piquionne and Philippe Delaye, against a brace by Djibril Cissé.
The last Rennes success in Auxerre dates back to the 2007/2008 season, and a 2-0 victory. Last season, the Breton club lost again in Burgundy, with a goal by Auxerre’s Polish international striker, Ireneusz Jelen (1-0). Rennes was also knocked out of the National Cups in Auxerre several times over the last few years (2003 in the Coupe de France, 2004 in the Coupe de la Ligue)
Therefore, and without any contestation, the balance of League confrontations between the teams remains clearly to the advantage of Auxerre.
